"WORDS FROM THE HEART"
---
(August 2012)

One of the many items of literary wisdom and inspiration that June collected during our lifetime together, was a little booklet that I recently found among her possessions. This little booklet was a publication by Reiman Publications dated in 1993 and entitled: “Words From The Heart”.
Reiman Publications also publishes the Reminisce" magazine that June has subscribed to for over 20 years. Although June has been gone now for over three years (2012) and was in an Alzheimer's facility for about four years, I have not had to renew our subscriptions!
Because of her Alzheimer's, June probably did not realize she was renewing the magazine far more times than necessary. I assume that June acquired this little booklet around the time of the print date in 1993. That date was just a few years before she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1998 based on memory symptoms noted in 1997.
This little booklet was so typical of June’s tastes in literature and a reflection of her personality.
The first page describes the contents as: “Favorite Sayings to Comfort, Cheer and Inspire!” As I read through the booklet I could not help but be impressed by the wisdom reflected in the many short sayings. Many of the sayings, while described as “Favorite”, were not ones that I had ever heard before.
Each of the book's sections, started out with an illustrative short story of a few paragraphs in length. The book ended with just such a short story. The story referenced a father who had ended his days with Alzheimer’s but had a satisfying and successful life. Here is that short story of only four paragraphs. What a great story and what a good plan of life for all…

“Every End is a New Beginning.”

“We may not like some things that suddenly change our lives, but they happen,” notes Jim Perley of Little Sioux,Iowa. “Our choice is to dwell on what can no longer be or to look for advantages and opportunities in the new circumstances.
“In 1927, (The year June was born) for example, my father was planning a new life as a mechanical engineer. But a car on a rainy evening changed that when it struck and killed my grandfather. My father stayed on the farm to put his younger sisters through college. But there he met my mother and they built a good life together.
“Asthma forced my father-in-law from farming. But he learned he could sell, and built a successful feed business.
“Now, we face other challenges. My parents grow increasingly frail. My father-in-law sits in a nursing home – his once powerful mind dulled by strokes and Alzheimer’s disease. Still we find solace…doing what we can to help them enjoy their days and sharing the satisfaction they feel for the successes in their lives. And we still learn from them.”
